Vangueria infausta | Wild-medlar for sale | Wildmispel
Velvet Wild-medlar is a small "truly Bush Veld" tree. It is deciduous, tolerates light frost, is water wise, grows at a medium rate and has a non-aggressive root system. Vaungueria infausta has large, dark green, velvety leaves. Its leaves are prone to attack my red mites, which then cause them to develop warts. Serious infection may slow the tree's growth. This pest is easily controlled by a mite pesticide which should be applied directly to growth buds as well systemically through soil drench. Wild-medlar bears edible (quite tasty) fruit. Plant Wild-medlar in a small garden to create a Bush Veld look and also for its foliage and fruit.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-2; Pollen, P0-1; Flowering months 9-2, (10-11). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
