Vachellia xanthophloea | Fever-tree for sale | Koorsboom
Vachellia (previously acacia) xanthophloea tolerates light frost but is not drought resistant. Fever tree is a fast growing deciduous thorn tree. It provides light shade and one can thus establish a garden in its shade. Vachellia xanthophloea has a showy yellow-green trunk and branches. Trees planted in a group is a beautiful sight. Fever tree grows very large and can therefore only be planted in large gardens or parks. Regrettably it does not do well in a container and this method is not a solution for the small garden. Acacia xanthophloea has an aggressive root system and needs ample water.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-3; Pollen, P0-1; Extrafloral Nectar, EN0-1; Flowering months 7-11, (9). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
Clay tolerance: Vachellia xanthophloea tolerates severe clay. (See blog-post "Tips for Planting Trees in Clay Soils" for more detail)
