Vachellia nilotica | Scented-pod thorn for sale | Lekkerruikpeul
The genus name of Scented thorn changed from Acacia to Vachellia. Vachellia nilotica is frost tolerant and is able to withstand moderate drought. It is a fast growing, deciduous thorn tree with a striking, black, fissured trunk. Acacia nilotica has a characteristic umbrella form, which provides deep summer shade. Scented-pod thorn's pods have a pleasant smell when crushed.
A few gardening ideas:
Scented thorn languishes in a container, but responds well to pruning. Acacia nilotica is a medium-small size tree and is therefor an ideal shade tree for smaller gardens. It is an excellent alternative for Paberbark thorn.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-1; Pollen, P0-1; Flowering months 9-4. (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
