Attributes of Natal mahogany trees
Natal mahogany tolerates mild frost (-2C), and is somewhat drought tolerant. It is a fast growing, evergreen tree which provides deep shade. Trichilia emetica has large, once compounded, dark green leaves. This leaf form makes it a good choice for planting in low light conditions (but do so only after consulting an expert!) Natal Mahogany's root system is non-aggressive.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-3; Pollen, P0-2; Flowering months 8-11, (9-10). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
