Attributes of Black thorn trees
Senegalia mellifera is a small, multi branch, deciduous thorn tree with V-shape stem growth and a mushroom form. It flowers in abundance in early spring. Flowers are short-lived and quickly followed by bright green foliage. Green seed pods soon turn into yellow papery pods. Black thorn is very drought tolerant. It sheds its leaves during a dry spell, only to bud again after receiving sufficient rain. It is Treeshop's experience that Senegalia mellifera is cold tolerant to at least -6C.

Plant Senagalia mellifera for its seasonal display. It is a hardy, no-nonsense tree. Black thorn has small, nasty hook thorns. Plant it in a spot where people movement is unlikely (or unwanted!). Senegalia mellifera is an iconic Kalahari desert tree and a must have for the gardening connoisseur.

We took this picture of Black thorn in the Kalahari, on the Polentswa 4x4 route. The route starts from the Polentswa camp in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It is one way via Sesatswe camp to Kaa gate in Botswana and back to Lijersdraai in South Africa via Lang Rambuka camp -a total distance of about 250km. We did the trip in August 2022. During this time Senegalia mellifera was in full bloom, providing a stunning display in the desert. When driving on this route, the pervasive sweet fragrance of their flowers was a sensory delight . It was a unique experience to appreciate the beauty of this species in its natural habitat.
