Attributes of Cape chestnut trees

Cape-chestnut (Wildekastaiing) is a frost hardy (up to -4C), medium size, evergreen tree which grows at an average rate. It has slightly aggressive roots and requires modest water. The tree is known for its striking, pale-pink flowers, often born in profusion. Flowers soon develop into large, woody fruit with a knobbly appearance.

Value to honeybees: Nectar, N1-2; Pollen, P1-3; Flowering months 7-3, (10-12). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)

A few gardening ideas for Cape chestnut

Cape-chestnut is a must plant if you want flowering trees in your garden. Since it can grow quite large, we recommend this tree for larger gardens only, where it will also provide shade. Calodendrum capense has been grown as a bonsai, so one would expect it to grow well in a large pot. Unfortunately we do not have first hand experience of this. Plant it in a well-drained container if you want to enjoy the splendor of this magnificent tree in a small or very small garden.

We saw this magnificent specimen of Cape chestnut on a hike in the Ebb-and Flow nature reserve near Knysna (a town along the Garden Route). It grows in ideal conditions next to a river, this being the reason for its very large size. (Click on the image to expand it)

Cape chestnut tree, planted as a street tree in George. Although it is still young, we do not expect Calodendrum capense planted here, to grow to nearly the same size as shown in the picture above. Notwithstanding, its mature size is probably to large for a small garden. (Click on the image to expand it)

Cape chestnut usually flowers only once per year in mid-summer. It may take 5 years or more before young trees start to flower. Calodendrum capense trees in 250L bags have begun to bear flowers at the Treeshop farm in Gauteng. We have also seen the specie in flower in Johannesburg. It is therefore safe to say that Calodendrum capense does well in cities located on the High Veld. (Click on the image to expand it)
