Syzygium cordatum | Waterberry tree for sale | Waterbessie
Waterberry tolerates light frost but not drought. This evergreen tree quickly looses its leaves when experiencing dry conditions - its survival mechanism. Fortunately the tree sprouts as quickly when its water supply is restored. Syzygium cordatum is a fast grower with a spreading canopy which provides deep shade. Its flowers and fruit are special attributes. Waterberry has an aggressive root system and is not suitable for planting in a small garden, or near a wall or paved area. It can be grown in a large container, but will require much love and care to keep it in a pristine condition. The tree responds well to pruning. Syzygium cordatum is an ideal deep shade tree for large gardens or parks.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N1-3; Pollen, P0-2; Flowering months 8-1, (9-10). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
Clay tolerance: Syzygium cordatum tolerates severe clay. (See blog-post "Tips for Planting Trees in Clay Soils" for more detail)
