Lowveld star-chestnut (Laeveld-sterkastaiing) is a medium-size, deciduous tree that grows fairly fast. It has a non-aggressive root system and has large, striking digitate leaves. New leaf growth has a red-brown color - really beautiful. But it is the fruit of sterculia murex that is really unique: a very large, spiky, lobed capsule, filled with numerous seeds embedded in stinging hairs. Best left alone!  Lowveld star-chestnut is slightly frost sensitive and requires modest water. Plant it in a small garden as "something out-of the ordinary". The species responds well to pruning and should grow in a large pot. Use this method if you want to enjoy this tree in a very small garden.

Value to honeybees: Nectar, N1?;  Pollen, P1?;   Flowering months 7-10.   (See  blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
