Securidaca longepedunculata | Violet-tree for sale | Krinkhout boom te koop
Violet-tree (Krinkhout boom) is a slow growing, small, deciduous tree with long, slender branches. Over time it develops an up-right trunk with smooth, light-grey bark. It is slightly frost sensitive and requires only modest quantities of water. The species has non-aggressive roots. But what sets this tree apart, is its striking purple flowers, sometimes borne in profusion. Securidaca longepedunculata is difficult to propagate, making it quite scarce. It is an undiscovered jewel and a tree for the connoisseur.
A few gardening ideas:
Plant the Violet-tree for its stunning, sweetly scented flowers. These, together with the tree's unique growth form, makes it "something different" and precious. It is not an easy grower and its growth performance is rather unpredictable. Plant Securidaca longepedunculata in a pertinent spot in your garden, where it will catch the eye of visitors and where you can enjoy its beauty every day. Violet-tree is recommended for a small or even very small garden.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N3?; Pollen, P2?; Flowering months 8-3, (9-10). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
