Searsia lancea | Karee tree for sale | Swart karee, Rooi karee
Karee is a very hardy tree. It tolerates severe frost and is also drought resistant. Searsia lancea is a semi-evergreen tree with a spreading growth form that results in interesting irregular trunk and branches. The black, coarse bark of the tree makes for a strong contrasts with its bright green leaves - especially in November/December, when the tree renews it leaves. A fully grown Karee attains an average size and is thus suitable for the smaller garden (but not for a very small garden). Unfortunately it is rather messy. Searsia lancea languishes in a container. Don't go this route.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-2; Pollen, P0-4; Flowering months 5-9, (6-7). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
