Red stinkwood tolerates light frost but not drought. It is a medium sized, evergreen tree, growing at a moderate rate. Prunus africana has simple, glossy dark-green leaves. Its flowers and fruit are quite striking. The tree’s trunk is very dark in color, forming a striking contrast with its leaves. Red stinkwood has a non-aggressive root system and exhibits a neat, upright growth form.

Some gardening ideas:

Prunus africana is an undiscovered jewel which will enhance the beauty of any garden. When in fruit it will attract fruit eating birds. Red stinkwood's roots are mildly aggressive and the tree needs regular watering. It is scarce and difficult to come buy, which makes Prunus africana a collectors item.  Unfortunately it does not grow well in a container. In our (limited) experience its leaves are quite susceptible to fungal attack during hot summer months.

Value to honeybees: Nectar, N2?;  Pollen, P2?;   Flowering months 1-12?, (3-5).   (See  blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
