Afrocarpus falcatus | Small-leaved yellowwood for sale | Outeniqua geelhout
Small-leaved yellowwood (previously Podocarpus, also known as Outeniqua yellowwood) withstands light frost but is not drought tolerant. It is an evergreen tree which grows at a medium rate. Genus Afrocarpus (previuosly Podocarpus) falcatus distinguishes between male and female trees. Only the latter bears fruit. Outeniqua yellow wood has dark green, needle like leaves. When growing in the open (in contrast to a forest habitat) it has a tendency to grow shoots from low down. These can be cut back to force the tree to develop height. If left alone it is likely to grow into an attractive, compact, conical shape. This from of Podocarpus falcatus makes for a striking focal point in the garden. Treeshop, being a boutique nursery, has both these growth forms in stock. Note that Small-leaved Yellowwood has a fairly aggressive side roots. It should not be planted close to a wall or adjacent to paving.
