Philenoptera violacea | Apple-leaf trees for sale | Appelblaar boom
Apple-leaf is 'n medium-small tree, sometimes with an irregular, crooked trunk. The tree has large, once divided leaves and bears clusters of violet flowers - often in profusion. When flowering it attracts a wide variety of insects. In our experience Philenoptera violacea has only a mildly aggressive root system. It is somewhat frost sensitive, deciduous and drought tolerant. Apple-leaf can be planted in a small garden. It takes a long time to develop a sturdy trunk and has to be thoroughly supported for the first few years. Unfortunately it does not grow well in a container.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N1-3; Pollen, P0-1; Flowering months 8-11, (10-11). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
