Pappea capensis | Jacket-plum tree for sale | Doppruim
Jacket-plum tolerates severe frost and is drought resistant. This small/medium sized, evergreen species distinguishes male and female trees. Only the latter bears capsule-like fruits which split open to reveal fleshy, bright-red seeds – eagerly eaten by birds. It is very difficult to identify female trees when they are not flowering or bearing fruit. Pappea capensis exhibits a dense, sometimes intricately angled branching structure. It has a non-aggressive root system. Use it as a focal point in a larger garden. Jacket-plumb responds positively to pruning and does well in a container if properly cared for. Pappea capensis is a popular bonsai.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-2; Pollen, P0-3; Flowering months 8-4, (1-2). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
