Attributes of Tarwood trees

Loxostylis alata is a fast growing, evergreen tree. It grows to a medium-small size. Tarwood has beautiful bright green compound leaves which have a reddish tint when young. The tree bears an abundance of white flowers. Flowers of female trees quickly transforms into red colored fruit. The latter remains on the tree for a long time, eventually turning creamy-white. Seeds of Loxostylis alata have a tar like cover - hence the common name "Tarwood". In our experience at the Treeshop nursery, it tolerates temperatures as low as -1C. Tarwood is an undiscovered jewel.

Value to honeybees: Nectar, N2; Pollen, P1?; Flowering months 8-4, (10-12). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)

A few gardening ideas for Loxostylis alata

For gardeners looking for something special to showcase their gardens, Loxostylis alata, commonly known as Tarwood, offers an excellent choice. This fast-growing evergreen tree is ideal for providing shade on hot days, making it a comfortable spot to relax outdoors. With separate male and female flowers, female trees produce a spectacular display as they transition into colorful fruit. Both sexes will attract pollinators to your garden. The tree's budding leaves exhibit a striking red tint, adding visual interest throughout the seasons. Given its mature size, Tarwood fits perfectly in medium-sized gardens; however, consider its slightly aggressive roots when selecting planting locations to ensure it complements your space effectively.

We took this photo of a Tarwood tree in Natures Valley in the Southern Cape Province. The species is endemic to coastal forest. It is interesting to note that loxostylis alata grows equally vigorous in the highveld in areas where minimum winter temperature does not drop below -1C.
