Leocosidea sericea | Old wood trees for sale | Ouhout
Old wood is a very hardy tree. It tolerates a minimum winter temperature as low as -6 degrees Celsius. The natural growth habit of the tree is informal (somewhat scruffy) with low hanging branches. Consequently it makes for an ideal screening tree for a large garden. Of course you can prune it to force an open trunk and higher crown. Leocosidea sericea has once compound discolorous leaves -dark-green above and grey green underneath. It bears spikes of small yellow flowers which attracts many insects. The tree's trunk and branches quickly look old and weather worn, hence the popular name "Old wood".
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N?; Pollen, P?; Flowering months 8-2, (8-10)?. (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
