Englerophytum magalismontanum | Transvaal milkplum for sale | Stamvrug
Transvaal milkplum is quite frost hardy and somewhat drought tolerant. It is an evergreen tree, unfortunately with a very slow growth rate. Englerophytum magalismontanum bears tasty red fruit on its trunk and branches – hence the Afrikaans name “Stamvrug” (trunk fruit). Leaves of the tree have distinctly different top and bottom colors, which makes it a striking garden species. Young branches and leaves are densely covered with fine brownish hairs. Transvaal milkplumb’s root system is not aggressive and mature trees are quite small.
A few gardening ideas
It follows from the above description that Transvaal milkplum is an excellent choice for the small garden or even very small garden. Englerophytum magalismontanum does well in a container and responds favorably to pruning. Transvaal milkplum is an undiscovered jewel. It is difficult to cultivate and is therefore not freely available in the retail market.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-1; Pollen, P0-2; Flowering months 6-1, (8-10). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
