Ekebergia capensis | Cape-ash tree for sale | Essenhout boom
Cape ash tolerates light frost but is not drought resistant. It is a fast growing, evergreen tree which gives deep shade. Ekebergia capensis has a deep green, once compound leave, which has a redish color when young. The tree's root system is non-aggressive. Cape ash leaves look similar to those of Wild plum (Harpephyllum caffrum) and the two species are easily confused. A reliable way to distinguish them is to cut a leave from each and observe the excretion of a clear sap from the Wild plum leave - which is not present on the Cape ash leave. Ekebergia capensis is a good choice for a large garden or park. Consider Ekebergia capensis as a hedgerow lining your entrance road.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-2; Pollen, P0-2; Flowering months 8-3, (9-11). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
