Cunonia capensis | Red-alder for sale | Rooiels boom
Cunonia capensis withstands light frost but is not drought tolerant. It is an evergreen tree with a medium growth rate. Red-alder has dark green, once compound leaves that are lanceolate in form. Rachis are wine-red in color (hence the common name). Leaf buds develop from a spoon-like casing - a unique growth form to the Red-alder. This phenomenon and Cunonia capensis's striking flowers (resembling a cream-coloured bottlebrush), make Red alder an highly recommended choice for small and large gardens.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N2-3; Pollen, P1?; Flowering months 2-6. (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
