The Leopard tree is very frost hardy and able to withstand moderate drought. It is a fast growing, deciduous tree. Caesalpinia ferrea is not indigenous. It is a beautiful tree, with dark green foliage which has a reddish color when young. Leopard tree bears bright yellow flowers, often in abundance. Its old bark peels in patches revealing white colored new bark. This patchy appearance is the reason for its popular name. Caesalpinia ferrea has an aggressive root system. It can grow into a large tree and should not be planted in smaller gardens. The tree responds well to pruning and thrives in a container. Use this method if you have a small garden. It is also a popular bonsai.
